SHEA, BATT.

Age at death: 36. Date of Death: 01-November-1914. Service No: 284107. Supplementary information: Son of John and Margaret Shea, of Droum, Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry.
From an article in the Enniscorthy Guardian; The British crusier “Monmouth” was sunk in a naval action in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chili, South America. The crusiers “Good Hope” and “Glasgow” were severely damaged, but apparently escaped with an auxiliary cruiser. A message from Otranto ( Iraly ) says that three German warships are now in Valpariso Bay, Chili. Five more warships and auxiliaries are outside the bay. The Mounmouth was an armoured cruiser of 9, 800 tons built at Glasgow at a cost of £979, 000. She belonged to what is known as the County Class, and carried a crew of 537 men. . Her armoured belt was 4. 2 inches of Krupp steel and her 14. 6 inch guns were protencted by 5. 4 inches of steel and her secondary guns by four inches. She was fitted with two torpedo tubes and had a speed of nearly 23 knots. The “Good Hope” is also and armoured cruiser, but much more heavily armoured and armed than that the Monmouth. Her belt is six inches of Krupp steel. And her 9. 2 inch guns are protected by 6. 5 inches. She also carries 16 6-inch guns and 15 quickfirers. Her speed is over 23 knots and she has a crew of 900 men. The Monmouth was commissioned in July, 1914, under the command of Captain Frank Brandt. The Good Hope was commissioned in 1912, and carried the flag of Sir Christopher Cradock, K. C. V. O. Grave or Memorial Reference: 3. Born, Killarney. Occupation on enlistment, Labourer. Age on enlistment; 31 years - months. Next of kin details; (widowed mother, husband has been dead many years)  Mrs Michael Sheehan, also listed as Mrs E Sheehan,155 Telford Street, Rockhampton, Queensland. Place and date of enlistment, 19-September-1914. Rockhampton, Queensland. Weight, 11st 6 lbs. Height, 5 feet, 9 ½  inches. Complexion, dark. Eyes, hazel. Hair, black. Listed as wounded and missing in the field. Buried ¾ mile east of Pozieres, 4 ½ miles north east of Albert, France. After a Court of Enquiry in March-1918 this was later changed to ‘killed in action’. Served in Anzac, Alexandria, Tel-El-Kabir, Heliopolis, Abbassia, Zeitoun, Marseilles, Etaples and France. The records as they stand seem to be mixed up with a Private James Herbert Davenport who served under the alias of SHEEHAN and Private Patrick Sheehan himself. In a document recording Pte Sheehan’s exhumation it is written that this Pte 2423 Sheehan was an alias, his true name been Davenport J. H. A quick look in the CWGC shows the same J.H. Davenport served as Sheehan and the service number of 1417. From what I can see these two men have their records and information mixed up, they are buried in different cemeteries and they died 8 months apart. A quick look at J.H.Davenport’s (Patrick Sheehan’s, No 1417) records show he was born in Alice and not from Ireland. Grave or Memorial Reference: VIII. D. 22. Cemetery: Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont in France.  [Related Documents]
