The 2,871grt British defensively-armed merchantship S.S. "Isleworth was sunk three miles south-west of Ventnor with the loss of 29 lives by German Submarine UC-17. She was carrying a cargo of iron ore.Supplementary information: Son of Maurice Reidy, of 22, Moyderwell, Tralee, Co. Kerry, and the late Honorah Reidy (nee Sullivan). Born, Tralee, County Kerry. Occupation on enlistment, Painter. Served an apprenticeship of five years. Age on enlistment; 33 years - months. Next of kin details; (sister) Lizzie Riordan, 4 Stangtons Row, Tralee, County Kerry. Place and date of enlistment, 18-June-1915. Melbourne, Victoria. Weight, 140 lbs. Height, 5 feet, 3 ½  inches. Complexion, fresh. Eyes, brown. Hair, brown. Previously rejected for military service due to lack of height. Suffered from Gastro Enteritis,(Anzac/Gallipoli)  Dysentry,( Malta) Lumbago and Influenza(Etaples)and was wounded in action in France with a shrapnel/gunshot wound to the neck. Transferred for treatment to an hospital in Birmingham. Returned to the French battlefields after treatment. Wounded again with a gunshot wound to the foot and transferred again to England for treatment. Eventually returned again to the French battlefields. Injured in an accident ‘in the field’ with a compound fracture to the arm and thigh and died at the 44th Casualty Clearing station. Buried by Reverend J.F.Morga, CF. ROCHE, FRANCIS.
Rank: Captain. Regiment or Service: Army Veterinary Corps. Unit: 10th Vet. Hosp. Secondary. Unit: (and Special Reserve).
Age at death: 28. Date of Death: 30-June-1917.
From De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour;-
Roche, Frances, Captain., Army Veterinary Corps. 6th son of the late Redmond Roche of Maglass, County Kerry. Educated Clongowes Wood College, and the Royal Veterinary College. Joined the O.T.C.at the Curragh and from there joined the Special Reserve, Army Veterinary Corps at Aldershot. Was called up on the outbreak of war in August-1914. Served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders attached to the 39th Brigade, R.F.A. Was severely wounded at the battle of the Aisne, 19-September and invalided home. On recovery was sent to Woolwich, returned to France in February-1916 and attached to the 15th Hussars, and died at Etaples, 30 June-1917 of wounds received in action on the Aisne. Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
He is also listed in’ The Roll of the sons and daughters of the Anglican Church Clergy throughout the world.’

Rejected as unfit due to defective teeth. Re examined and passed. Place and date of enlistment, 03-August-1915. Melbourne, Victoria. Killed in action at Fleur Bay, France.Weight, 10st 6 lbs. Height, 5 feet, 6 ¾  inches. Complexion, ruddy. Eyes, blue. Hair, dark brown. Reported missing in action in France. Report later changed to killed in action after a Court of Enquiry in August-1917 and ‘presumed buried in no mans land, approx 5 J90.43 to 5Ko251, Hazebrouck 5A.’. His mother, Ellen Rosney received a pension of  25 shillings per fortnight from October-1917. A letter from his mother to the records state ‘ My sons mate says that they both ‘hopped over’ together and although he made all possible enquiries he could get no trace of him dead or alive. Previous military experience, 1 years 2 months New South Wales, Bushman. South African War 1900-1901. 144 days, Rand Rifles, South Africa, 1906. Holds a V.G.discharge. Place and date of enlistment, 20-December-1915. Melbourne, Victoria. Weight, 156 lbs. Height, 5 feet, 8 ½  inches. Complexion, medium. Eyes, blue. Hair, brown.Wounded in action (gunshot wound to the thigh) in France, 12-August-1916. Treated in Sherlock Street Auxiliary hospital in Liverpool and returned to the French battlefields 10-April-1917. Killed in action in Belgium. Records state he was buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres. This was later changed to Birr Cross Roads cemetery. I can not find anything in his records to show his body was exhumed and re-buried. One grave registration document show him buried in Plot I Row F Grave 19(not 18). RUSSELL, TIMOTHY.

Born, Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland. Occupation on enlistment, Farm Labourer.
Age on enlistment; 27 years 2 months. Next of kin details; (mother) Mary Russell, Nauntinane, Killroglin, County Kerry. Previous military experience, 6 months Militia Regiment. Place and date of enlistment, 09-October-1914. Rosehill Camp, NSW.
Weight, 151 lbs. Height, 5 feet, 6 ¾  inches. Complexion, dark. Eyes, brown. Hair, brown. Wounded with a gunshot wound to the right arm and treated on hospital ship ‘Dunluce Castle’ and the No 2 Hospital in Cairo. Rejoined his unit 6 weeks later in Gallipoli. Five weeks later he was  listed as wounded and later changed to killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula after a Court of Enquiry at Serapeum.
