military service due to lack of height. Suffered from Gastro
Enteritis,(Anzac/Gallipoli) Dysentry,( Malta) Lumbago and
Influenza(Etaples)and was wounded in action in France with a
shrapnel/gunshot wound to the neck. Transferred for treatment to an
hospital in Birmingham. Returned to the French battlefields after
treatment. Wounded again with a gunshot wound to the foot and transferred
again to England for treatment. Eventually returned again to the French
battlefields. Injured in an accident ‘in the field’ with a compound
fracture to the arm and thigh and died at the 44th Casualty
Clearing station. Buried by Reverend J.F.Morga, CF. His sister, Elizabeth
Riordan received a pension of 12 shillings per fortnight.Cemetery:

Roche,
Frances, Captain., Army Veterinary Corps. 6th son of the late
Redmond Roche of Maglass, County Kerry. Educated Clongowes Wood College,
and the Royal Veterinary College. Joined the O.T.C.at the Curragh and from
there joined the Special Reserve, Army Veterinary Corps at Aldershot. Was
called up on the outbreak of war in August-1914. Served with the
British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders attached to the 39th
Brigade, R.F.A. Was severely wounded at the battle of the Aisne,
19-September
and invalided home. On recovery was sent to Woolwich, returned to France
in February-1916 and attached to the 15th Hussars, and died at
Etaples, 30 June-1917 of wounds received in action on the Aisne. Buried in
Etaples Military Cemetery.
He is also listed in’ The Roll of the sons and daughters of the Anglican
Church Clergy throughout the world.’

after a Court of Enquiry in August-1917 and ‘presumed buried in no mans
land, approx 5 J90.43 to 5Ko251, Hazebrouck 5A.’. His mother, Ellen Rosney
received a pension of 25 shillings per fortnight from October-1917. A
letter from his mother to the records state ‘ My sons mate says that they
both ‘hopped over’ together and although he made all possible enquiries he
could get no trace of him dead or alive.

can not find anything in his records to show his body was exhumed and
re-buried. One grave registration document show him buried in Plot I Row F
Grave 19(not 18). An Imperial War Graves Commission document show his
burial details as below.

listed as wounded and later changed to killed in action on the Gallipoli
Peninsula after a Court of Enquiry at Serapeum.
