seven months, and, owing to an accident was invalided home. On recovery he
was attached to the Royal Barracks, Dublin, for over a year. From there he

the 42nd Divisional Train, and went to France with them in
February, 1917, obtaining shortly after a permanent commission, and died

extract from a letter received by his wife from his Colonel in France;
“One of the best and bravest of men. He had served under me at train
headquarters for over nine month’s and had won my affection, even as he
had that of every officer and man of the train, and of those outside the
train too, for few could resist his charm of manner and boyish good

From an article in the Enniscorthy Guardian, June 1915. Interesting Letter
from the Front. Writing home to his parents at New Ross last week from the
front, James Murphy of the Royal Engineers, and son of Mr James Murphy,
Neville Street, New Ross, gives very interesting details. He has been at
the front since the war commenced and has gone through several battles,
having miraculous escapes on several occasions. Previous to joining the
Royal Engineers he was a prison warder and his great mechanical knowledge
quickly attracted the attention of the authorities of his Regiment and he
was offered promotion in a comparatively short time., The following is
part of his letter
“Dear Parents-Even though many miles from you and on the battlefield, I
don’t forget you and never will. Distance or circumstance will never make
me forget the affection I owe my parents, whose prayers are being offered
each day for my welfare along with the prayers of my dear and beloved
wife. I write to my dear wife every day to keep her in good spirits, and
with a devoted love to her as my wife, and with God;s help when the war is
over we will all meet again, and I have made up my mind to spend my
holidays with ye all, particularly as those holidays shall be the most
enjoyable ones of my life, and away from the continuous roaring of weapons
and spattering of shells, all of which I may say is second nature to me
now. But give me peace, that beautiful peace that should always reign and
which would be a blessing-one of the greatest blessings that ever came
during our time from Almighty God. I attend Benediction every night since
I have been out here, and go to Holy Communion every Sunday.
Conscription is not far off in my opinion, and it is time to pull a lot of
the slackers out of their feather beds. I am sure the poor class have well
contributed their position, and, dear parents, you can say that you have
contributed one son who is in the thick of the fight. Germany will be
beaten if it was to take us years to do it, and there shall be no
surrender to the Kaiser and his outlaws. I can tell you straight he will
get something this month that he has not got since the beginning of the
war, and he will get something twice as hot in July and treble as hot in
October, or maybe sooner, and before the New Year I am sure peace will
shine o’er the earth again, and in my opinion the Kaiser will then be fast
on his way back to where he came from (dust). May God send peace soon and
dispose of the Kaiser as He wishes. We are not the Kaisers judge, and it
is a good job he is not ours either. As the French man says, he is no bonn
(no good). The writer gives some further interesting passages, and winds
up by saying that he is in the best of health, and hopes to meet his
parents, wife and child and his brothers and sisters when the war is over.
