Enniscorthy
Guardian, Nov, 1914; British Battleship blown up. Terrible loss of life,
London, Thursday.
It was announced in the House of Commons
this afternoon that the battleship ‘Bulwark’ was blown up in Sheerness
Harbour this morning. Only twelve lives were saved. The ‘Bulwark’ was a
battleship of fifteen thousand tons. She was completed in 1902 and
re-commissioned at Chatham in June, 1912. She had a compliment of seven
hundred and fifty men, and carried four twelve inch guns. The ‘Bulwark’
cost £997, 846. It is believed that the cause of the disaster was an
internal magazine explosion, which rent the ship asunder. There was no
upheaval of water, and when the smoke cleared, the ship had entirely
disappeared. An inquiry into the affair will be held tomorrow.
