County Kildare, J.P., by his wife, Frances, 3rd daughter of the
late Joseph Nolan of Carrigun House, Balinglass, County Kildare,
Landholder. Born in Tarbert, County Kerry,12-january-1897. Educated,
Mungret College, Limerick. Was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant,
Leinster Regiment, 09-August-1915. Served with the Expeditionary Force in
France and Flanders from July, 1916, when he was attached to the Royal
Irish Regiment. Took part in the fighting at Guillemont, 03-September, was
gassed on the 8h on the eve of the Battle of Guinchy, and invalided home
suffering also from shell-shock. Returned to France on Christmas Eve
rejoining his won regiment and was killed in action near the Marne
18-January-1917 while taking a soldier from an exposed position. Lieut-Col
A.D.Murphy wrote; “He was killed instantaneously by a trench-mortar bomb
whilst on duty with his company in the front line trenches. Your son had
not long been with us, but he showed great promise, and it is too bad that
his life should be so suddenly brought to an end.” He was mentioned in
Despatches by F.M.Sir Douglas Haig, for gallant and distinguished service
in the field.
