born in Kilcommon, worked as a fettler, was 5’ 7 ½” tall had blue eyes
black hair and a fair complexion. His wife Ester lived at various
addresses, 62 Margaret Street, Petersham in New South Wales, "Benicia",
Cambridge St, Watson's Bay, New South Wales and later moved to 70c
Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst. Enlisted on 15th of Nov 1915. It was said
that he enlisted to avenge his brother Philip Brennans death. The date of
his brothers death and Joseph’s enlistment would seem to bear this out. He
went to Tel-el-Kabir, Marseilles and also trained in the famous Etaples
bull ring. Died of wounds in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station and buried
in Albert. Josephs other brother John Brennan was a Police Constable in
Australia. His mothers address (Mary Brennan) after his death was High
Street Killarney. The death plaque and medals were sent to his widow
Ester. Supplementary information; Son of John Brennan and his wife Mary
Carey; husband of Esther Brennan, of "Benicia", Cambridge St, Watson's
Bay, New South Wales. Native of Tipperary, Ireland. His brother, Philip
Joseph Brennan was Killed in Gallipoli with the Australians. There is no

death benefit and this was later paid to his mother. His personal effects
were sent home in three kitbags on board S.S.‘Ascantus’ and subsequently
lost. As they were not signed for when loading the ship no insurance claim
would be entertained. The three kit bags contained presents from Ireland,
souvenirs from France and other property valued at twenty pounds.Grave or

BURNS, JAMES.

"Indefatigable."
Age at death: 30. Date of Death: 31-May-1916. Service No: 226313. During
the Battle of Jutland the German Battlecruiser Von Der Tann fired 11 inch
shells at the Indefatigable. The first two entered ‘X’ magazine area and
blew out the bottom of the ship and she began sinking by the stern.
More 11 inch shells from the Van Der Tann destroyed ‘A’ turret and also
blew up the forward magazine and she then sank. There were only two
survivors of her crew of 1017 men. The Van Der Tann was scuttled in Scapa
